Be Smart when choosing a wedding caterer, as far as wedding expenses go, your catering or food bill will typically be your largest expense. You will want to invest some time in finding the right wedding caterer to suite your tastes. Plan a time when you can taste their food and pay attention to presentation. Ask about dinnerware, references, vendor meals, minimums and if decorations are provided with the wedding catering. Make sure you discuss the style you want and get a price quote in writing to make sure you stay within your Wedding Catering Budget.

Tips for Saving Money on Wedding Catering

  1. Consider having a Breakfast, Tea, Cocktail, or Lunch Wedding Reception to save money on food and catering costs.

  2. Choose simple white table linens instead of a fancy pattern or an overlay (one table cloth over another). If you want color and pattern, you can add plenty with your table centerpiece.

  3. A Buffet will offer your guests variety and save you money. Pasta stations are very economical. Consider other ethnic types of food for your stations, such as Chinese, Mexican or Indian.

  4. Have your wedding caterering caterer prepare just your main dishes and have friends and family prepare appetizers, side dishes, bread, and salad.

  5. Stay away from certain foods… like shrimp, salmon, lobster and beef tenderloin. If you have your heart set on one of these dishes -- incorporate it as an appetizer rather than the main course.

  6. Limit the number of hors d'oeuvres.

  7. When selecting your menu, be careful of all the "extras" that the catering manager may suggest...such as the five course dinner...soup and salad... two types of dessert and wedding cake! When everything sounds so delicious, it's easy to get carried away and so does your wedding catering bill.
